Introducing innovation in the peri-operative care pathway

Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West (BOB) Integrated Care System (ICS) and the Oxford AHSN led a successful collaborative bid for the NHS digital transformation funds. This supports innovation in the peri-operative care pathway and the elective recovery plan to boost capacity and deal with the backlog in elective care following the pandemic.

The programme has implemented four digital technologies in four sites. One of these technologies is PRO-MAPP which supports the triage of patients waiting for surgery. PRO-MAPP was introduced as part of the Preoperative Assessment Clinic Triage (PACT) service within Oxford University Hospitals. The overall aim of this service is to reduce time spent in orthopaedic pre-assessment clinics (for patients and staff) and reduce geographical inequality in waiting times.

The importance of including staff in any pathway redesign is paramount in both the planning and execution phase. Staff felt that the innovation would be useful within the service and had many ideas around implementation.

Health Innovation Oxford & Thames Valley Industry Partnerships programme (SIP) is leading on the regional work with BOB ICS.  Please contact flora.gleave@healthinnovationoxford.org for further information.
