Developing health and wellbeing leads in the NHS

As part of the Growing Occupational Health programme, NHS England commissioned a review of health and wellbeing leads’ development and support needs across England (excluding primary care).

The Oxford AHSN, North East North Cumbria AHSN and Spark the Difference are collaborating with health and wellbeing leads to provide co-designed answers to these questions:

  • What is an inspiring, engaging, and appropriate way to develop those who lead on NHS staff wellbeing in organisations/system?
  • What competencies, support and system structures will enable these individuals to effectively lead the wellbeing agenda?
  • How will these mechanisms enable them to co-create cultures of wellbeing with their staff, to feel cared for and pass that care onto patients?
  • How can this new approach be tested at a manageable scale to generate maximum learning?

The review is made up of three phases:

  1. Scoping
  2. Codesign
  3. Pilot

Phases 1 and 2 have highlighted the need for equity around responsibilities and organisational engagement.

Phase 3 is taking place November 2022-July 2023. We will test the findings from phases 1 and 2 in organisational context.  It is hoped that key capabilities and an organisational model to support the health and wellbeing leads and local agenda can be developed.
