Sleepio and me: Matthew

Matthew is a social worker living in Wokingham

Matthew, 37, has struggled with poor sleep since childhood.

He said: “It’s just always been bad. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have trouble sleeping.”

Things came to a head a few years ago when Matthew’s lack of sleep began to take a serious toll on his emotional wellbeing.

He said: “I became chronically and clinically depressed, and I struggled with personal relationships and keeping a regular job.”

While Matthew found limited relief in using mindfulness techniques, he struggled to make it part of his routine, and any positive changes were not sustained. After seeking help from friends, family, healthcare professionals, and therapists – all to no avail – Matthew finally began to experience improvements in his sleep after his GP recommended that he take part in a trial of a new digital therapy for insomnia, called Sleepio.

Matthew describes the impact of the six-week online course as life-changing: “Sleepio has genuinely had a significant positive impact on my life. I would happily say that I no longer have a sleep problem.”

“Sleepio has enabled me to overcome my depression. It’s shown me that I can take charge and be in control of my thoughts and actions. Whenever I feel challenged or experience a cumulative set of stresses, which previously would have tipped me into depression, I now check myself and choose to feel okay. This happened to me following both the advice from the programme and as a result of consistent good-quality sleep.

“It really has changed things for me for the better. I cannot describe the improvement in all areas of my life and wellbeing that improved sleep has had.”
