Harnessing innovation to create additional protective equipment

The Oxford AHSN has been working with NHS partners, science parks, research establishments, manufacturers and other AHSNs to source additional supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) and support innovation, especially relating to resuable products.

With Wessex AHSN we have been exploring the potential for reprocessing PPE, establishing a community of interest among NHS trusts and linking into NHS regional and national PPE teams and other AHSNs.

One outcome was the creation of round-the-clock production lines using a number of 3D printers in the Reading area to make face visors at a rate of up to 300 per day. These were distributed to GP surgeries and other frontline NHS services.

Partners in this project included the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the University of Reading and Cisco which provided more than 100 volunteers to support this project. Read more in this blog by David Meads, the chief executive of Cisco UK and Ireland.
