In the UK, 405,000 older people (aged 65+) currently live in care homes. This represents 16% of older people aged over 85. In the Oxford AHSN region (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire) we have 585 care homes.
Many older people are likely to have complex and multiple long–term conditions requiring ongoing health and social care support. The Oxford AHSN has a portfolio of projects which aim to improve the safety and well-being of care home residents – as well as supporting care providers, the health and social care professionals who work alongside them, commissioners of care home placements and other key stakeholders. This work aligns with the NHS England Enhanced Health in Care Homes initiative.
For some of this work we liaise with colleagues in the other 15 AHSNs in England on national programmes. Follow the links below for brief outlines of our current work in the care home sector together with contacts for further information.
