Lung nodules

With the National Institute for Health Research and Mirada Medical, the Imaging Clinical Network has developed a tool to assess the likelihood of lung nodules being cancerous when seen on a lung CT scan.

This project required the collection of retrospective lung images to test the accuracy of the tool. Hospital trusts from across the Oxford AHSN region agreed to provide secured and anonymised CT scans with visible nodules of the correct size to assess the trial software and analyse the pathway followed by patients.

The aim is to implement the tool so that when nodules are spotted on a scan a tool can be used to highlight “higher risk” nodules which could become cancerous. This would allow earlier intervention and fewer missed opportunities for diagnosis.
