Learning and service change resulting from clinical incidents and challenging or unusual cases tends to remain within the trust in which it occurred. A key part of patient safety and reduction of patient risk is to remove these boundaries and bring together multiple disciplines in a non-confrontational environment to talk about their experiences.
The platform for the Oxford AHSN Maternity Clinical Network’s shared learning events was drawn from the ten year experience of the Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal Network. Their success in sharing learning built a sense of teamwork and allowed them to identify areas for improvement collaboratively.
The Oxford AHSN Maternity Network now holds multidisciplinary shared learning events every 6-8 months, inviting midwives, doctors and other interested parties to learn from each other.
The second of these events was held in July 2016 and was very well received. It included learning point presentations from all trusts in the Oxford AHSN region. They covered rare cases, projects or incidents with teams reflecting on how they could learn from each other and potential action points.
- The next event is on 15 March 2017. Details here.
Future events will include follow-up presentations on evolving projects.
